Governing Specification: ISO/IEC 24724:2011 / GS1 General Specifications Section 5.6

Data Format & Required Fields

Encodes 14 numeric digits (including Modulo 10 check digit) in a high-density linear format readable by omnidirectional POS laser scanners. Significantly more compact than standard UPC/EAN symbols.

Allowed Character Set14 numeric digits (or with (01) GS1 prefix).
Payload Length Rule Between 14 and 18 characters
Required GS1 Structure Encodes standardized GS1 Application Identifiers (AIs). Unit-level and master packaging require primary identification (e.g. GTIN-14 or SSCC-18) combined with variable batch and serialization attributes for supply chain verification.
Check Digit / Checksum Rule Requires a verified modulo-10 check digit to prevent scanner misreads and data transposition errors.
Example Valid Format(01)00300012345671

Industry Guidance & Practical Applications

  • Loose fresh produce (apples, citrus, vegetables) at supermarket checkout
  • Single-dose OTC pharmacy blister packaging
  • Small consumer hardware and cosmetic items
Packaging & Scanning Notes: Commonly deployed in Indian supermarket chains and agricultural export operations for fresh food traceability without bulky stickers.

Symbol Constraints & Label Guidelines

  • Strictly numeric data; limited to 14-digit GTIN payload.
  • Cannot encode arbitrary alphanumeric strings without GS1 structure.
