Pharmaceutical manufacturers, repackagers, and wholesale distributors require structured 2D DataMatrix encoding (01) GTIN-14, (21) Serial Number, (17) Expiration Date, and (10) Lot/Batch Number. Vision Scan provides full syntactic validation, check-digit verification, and print-ready high-resolution vector exports.
GS1 DataMatrix Guide
Linear 1D barcodes (Code 128, UPC-A, EAN-13, Code 39) encode data horizontally along a single axis, typically holding up to 30 alphanumeric characters. In contrast, 2D matrix symbologies (DataMatrix, QR Code, Aztec) encode data both vertically and horizontally into dense module grids, capable of storing thousands of alphanumeric bytes with built-in Reed-Solomon error correction and 360-degree omnidirectional reading.

GS1 standards govern how supply chain metadata is formatted within barcodes. Standardized Application Identifiers (AIs) prefix each data element: (01) GTIN-14 product identification, (10) batch/lot number, (17) expiration date (YYMMDD), and (21) serial number. This standardized structure allows warehouse scanners and ERP systems to automatically parse complex item-level data without custom regex scripting.

The global retail and healthcare supply chain is currently executing the "Sunrise 2027" transition. Retail point-of-sale systems worldwide are upgrading scanners to support 2D barcodes—specifically GS1 Digital Link QR Codes and GS1 DataMatrix—at consumer checkout. This transition enables packaging to carry a single 2D barcode that serves both warehouse inventory tracking and direct-to-consumer digital engagement.

Accurate check digits prevent misreads, mispicks, and costly shipping rejections. For GTIN-8, GTIN-12 (UPC-A), GTIN-13 (EAN-13), and GTIN-14 (ITF-14 / GS1 DataMatrix), Vision Scan automatically executes the GS1 Modulo-10 check digit algorithm with alternating 3 and 1 weights. Symbols utilizing Modulo-43 (Code 39) or Modulo-103 (Code 128) are computed authoritative to guarantee verification standards.
The GS1 DataMatrix is the globally mandated standard under the US FDA Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA), EU Falsified Medicines Directive (EU FMD), and FDA UDI regulations. Its compact square footprint, high data density, and FNC1 delimiter make it ideal for small pharmaceutical cartons, vials, and blister packs.
A standard DataMatrix ECC 200 encodes arbitrary text or binary data. A GS1 DataMatrix includes a mandatory FNC1 symbol character in the first code position. This FNC1 character flags to barcode scanners that the content adheres to the GS1 General Specifications and contains standardized Application Identifiers.
Vision Scan allows instant vector SVG and PDF exports in addition to high-resolution raster PNG. Vector exports preserve razor-sharp line edge contrast at any print scale or DPI, preventing ink bleed and quiet zone violations during flexographic or thermal printing.
Vision Scan RC1 provides a signed Android evaluation kit, including a Zebra Android reference path. iOS and Linux are source previews, cloud is experimental, and there is no supported Windows SDK.
